Radical Acceptance
You may have already heard the term Radical Acceptance but if you haven’t then allow me to explain. Radical Acceptance is a type of mindfulness strategy where you take a conscious, intentional, and habitual effort to change how you interact with your emotions and challenging situations.
This means purposely making the effort to acknowledge and honor difficult situations and emotions. Accepting things as they are and not as we wish them to be thorough trying to ignore, avoid, or wishing the situation were different.
What Radical Acceptance isn’t:
It doesn’t mean you have given up. Acceptance doesn’t mean complacency or that you stop.
It also doesn’t mean that you “approve” of the situation or that you found it “acceptable” for your life in anyway.
Why Radical Acceptance?
Resisting reality leads to an internal struggle that makes it easier for you to fall into self-blame, self-doubt, anxiety, depression. Radical acceptance skips that struggle step, away from pain and towards peace.
For example, You can get mad every time you are in rush hour traffic, screaming, yelling or even silently seethe while in bumper to bumper traffic which can kinda shit on your day and perhaps your evening where you would rather be enjoying time with loved ones or enjoyable activities. With Radical Acceptance you instead choose to accept that your city/town/highway system etc. has shitty traffic and choose to accept it for what it is and you can then find something to enjoy while you wait to get thru traffic. You don’t get mad at the mountain for being high, why be mad a traffic being slow? It does not serve you or your emotional needs at the moment. Instead, throw that podcast, audiobook or your favorite Rich Homie Quan (RIP) album on high volume!
